Jan as Expert

I have been in the field of deafblindness for the past 50 years, as a teacher, as a researcher and, above all, as an advocate for the rights of people with deafblindness to live full, meaningful lives.

My professional career can be distinguished by 6 different roles:

1. Jan as Researcher

I have engaged in several types of research. My research activities initially focused on groups of people with multiple sensory impairments. Gradually, I began to concentrate on individuals with deafblindness, and studied these people in-depth, by incorporating neuro-biological perspectives about learning and behaviour.

2. Jan as Author

Throughout my career, I have published articles related to my research and experience. Many of these articles are available on the Internet, particularly through the National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness: http://nationaldb.org/.

3. Jan as Assessor

I am best known for my work assessing children with multiple sensory impairments, including deafblindness, who have additional disabilities. You will find a detailed description of my child-guided approach on this web site.

4. Jan as Developer

I’m also known for my development of the so-called "van Dijk Curriculum," and the "van Dijk Approach to Assessment." This web site provides detailed information about both topics.

5. Jan as Consultant

I’ve been a consultant for many decades. By invitation from universities and other organisations, I have consulted throughout the world on behalf of children with multiple sensory impairments and other disabilities. I always make contact with the child before giving advice about how best to handle a certain problem. My approach is highly appreciated.

6. Jan as Producer

In collaboration with others, I have produced several CDs and DVDs, which can be ordered through the Webshop on this web site, or from American Printing House for the Blind (APH). APH has recently published a guidebook/manual with double DVDs that describes my approach to child-guided assessment.
